Meet Lal Ro Puia, the New President of the Alliance of Myanmar

April 6, 2026

A new national church president begins his term in Myanmar, leading 1,289 members in mission, discipleship, and gospel outreach.

In Myanmar, where churches continue to serve amid hardship and uncertainty, a new leader is preparing to guide the national church with a focus on mission, unity, and faithful witness to the gospel.

Rev. Lal Ro Puia was born into a Christian family on August 7, 1983, in Bokkan (Zohmun) Village, Tamu District, Sagaing Region. He is one of eight children. In 2002, he received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord.

In 2021, he married Lal Nun Hlui, and together they are raising their two daughters, Mal Sawm Sangzuali, age four, and Lal Rin Awmi, five months old.

After completing a Bachelor of Theology at Holiness Theological Seminary in Yangon in 2006, Rev. Lal Ro Puia entered pastoral ministry and has served within the national church for nearly two decades. He currently ministers at Kanan Alliance Church.

At the General Council business meeting in February 2026, the national assembly elected him to serve as president for a four-year term, beginning in March.

A Growing Church with a Mission

The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) Church of Myanmar that Rev. Lal Ro Puia now leads was founded in April 1985 in Yangon and has grown through local leadership and a commitment to mission.

Today, the church includes 1,289 members, 13 churches, nine ordained ministers, and six missionaries serving across the country. This community reflects a steady witness in a nation where Christians represent a small percentage of the population and are often a part of the ethnic minority groups.

From its beginnings, the church has carried a vision to make the gospel known, both in cities and in remote areas, raising leaders and sending workers to serve where the need is greatest.

Serving in a Challenging Context

Myanmar continues to face political instability, economic hardship, and displacement. In this setting, many churches have remained present in their communities, offering both spiritual care and practical help.

Recent accounts describe how believers have supported displaced families, provided food and shelter, and continued discipleship and evangelism. Their witness is expressed not only in words, but also in daily acts of service.

This reality shapes the responsibility now entrusted to Rev. Lal Ro Puia as he begins his term.

A Vision for the Years Ahead

As he steps into national leadership, Rev. Lal Ro Puia has identified three priorities:

  • To share the gospel of Jesus Christ with unreached people.
  • To train and equip believers to become mission-minded.
  • To establish two new local churches.

His vision reflects both continuity with the church’s history and a commitment to future growth.

“Please pray for me and my family,” he said. “Pray that we may seek God first and lead his people in the right way, and that he will guide the national church as I serve in this responsibility.”

A Call to Prayer

As the national church enters this new season, Rev. Lal Ro Puia invites the global Alliance to pray for:

  • Wisdom and guidance in leadership.
  • Unity among pastors and members.
  • Protection and strength for those serving in difficult areas.
  • The spread of the gospel among unreached communities.

In Myanmar, where the church continues its witness during many challenges, this new chapter begins with a shared commitment to follow God and to make him known.
