Latin American Alliance Gathers in Peru to Share Spiritual Leadership

November 20, 2023

The AWF Latin America (CLA) Region united in a transformative gathering in October in Lima, Peru. Representatives from diverse cultures came together, sharing stories, embracing wisdom, and creating a tapestry of renewal that resonated beyond the symposium’s confines.

Amid the bustling streets of Lima, Peru, a unique rhythm emerged as the Latin American Alliance gathered from October 23-25, 2023. The event was more than a convergence, however. It was a spiritual journey where representatives from diverse countries forged connections, prayed together, and delved into the teachings of “Spiritual Leadership.” In this vibrant atmosphere, stories of renewal and leadership insights took center stage.

Meetings echoed with prayers, bridging gaps between ministries and the presidents of CLA member countries. A unique blending of voices, experiences, and commitments filled the air, creating an atmosphere of communion that transcended geographical boundaries. This wasn’t just an assembly; it was a tapestry of shared journeys and collective aspirations.

During these gatherings, the Amada (CLA Women’s Ministry) sisters, a testament to unity and sisterhood, came together to share experiences and lift collective prayers. Their bond exemplified the essence of the CLA gathering – a harmonious blend of individual stories contributing to a collective spiritual melody.

At the heart of the event, the Theological Institutions of the Alliance in Latin America (ITAAL), emphasized collaboration for seminary development across borders. The focus on “Spiritual Leadership,” rooted in the teachings of the New Testament books of 1 and 2 Timothy, brought profound insights for leaders navigating the complexities of contemporary times, among the many voices that echoed in this spiritual symphony.

Reflecting on the experience, Pastor Jorge Taberna, Rector of the Alliance Theological Education Center in Uruguay, said, “It was an enriching time, especially the Symposium format and the increased participation of leaders who were not delegates. Observing ministry developments, contributions to affiliated churches, and the involvement of international entities like AWF and U.S. Alliance Missions promoted understanding and cooperation,” Pastor Taberna said. “This strengthened my global vision and connection in Christian service.”

As the sun set on the opening day, October 23, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. Ministry meetings paved the way for an inaugural worship service, where Pastor Jura Yanagihara, president of the Alliance World Fellowship (AWF), set the tone with a powerful session on “Strength Comes from the Lord.” His words resonated through the following days as five plenary sessions unfolded, each a chapter in the spiritual narrative of the gathering.

Pastor David Muthre, president of CLA, led discussions on “Requirements for the Servants of the Lord,” while Pastor Alex Fajardo and Pastor Miguel Ángel Rivera shared insights on navigating the challenges of ministry. Pastor Iván Flores explored “The Christian Ethics of the Servants of the Lord,” and Pastor Ángel Barrientos urged courage in the face of adversity with the theme “It is Necessary to be Brave in the Gospel.”

On Tuesday, the CLA Conference delved into the intricate details of activities carried out by the leadership, covering Missions, Latin American Theological Faculty (FATELA), ITAAL, and Amada. Pastor Walter Pérez’s exploration of the significance of suffering for the gospel set a poignant tone on Wednesday, closing the event with a reflection on the necessity to persevere and preach the gospel.

Beyond the agenda, the essence of the gathering was woven into the fabric of shared experiences, traditional Peruvian cuisine, and the melodious notes of Christian music. The 50th anniversary celebration of the Lima Encounter with God movement marked the culmination of the event, a moment of collective praise of the faithfulness of the Lord.

In the end, Lima wasn’t just a destination; it was a milestone in a spiritual journey, a chapter in the story where hearts and lives found renewal, connections were forged, and the call to spiritual leadership was embraced with open arms. As attendees reflect now on those transformative days with the echoes of Lima, it is a reminder that individual stories, when woven together, create a tapestry that transcends time and place.
