Our story begins in 1940 when missionary Miss Bessie Stella Simmerman Holmer arrived in Guatemala from the United States and after some time of reflection decided to start the foundation of an interdenominational mission which grew to have 32 churches in different parts of our country, until December 2, 1958, when he departed to the presence of the Lord. By that time, he had also established a Bible institute, a charitable association called “Garden of Roses”, an orphanage, a capital city urban bus company called “ADASA” and other investments which contributed to the support of the Lord’s work.
Simmerman adrift, with a total membership of 1,530 people. In 1967, a commission comprised of two of the leading pastors, Brothers Felipe Ibáñez Solís and Rogelio Segura Ayala (both now deceased), were commissioned by the provisional Board of Directors to travel to the United States. Their purpose was to seek international support for a church that shared the same vision and doctrine as missionary Bessie Stella Simmerman. Several days passed before they found a Hispanic church in New York City belonging to the Christian and Missionary Alliance that used the same hymnal as the one used in Guatemala, entitled “Hymns of the Christian Life.”
This created contact and familiarity with C&MA. The first talks were very emotional with Pastor Demetrio Cruz, who took the initiative to process the recognition of the work in Guatemala with the Alliance authorities, headquartered at that time in Nyack, New York. After a reasonable time of study and reflection, the union of the 17 Guatemalan churches with the Christian and Missionary Alliance of the United States took place in a special service held at the National Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts on June 22, 1969, becoming part to this day of one of the largest evangelical denominations in the world, whose presence is in more than ninety countries and continues to expand with the sending of missionaries to other latitudes.
It should be emphasized that the doctrine of the C&MA is based on four basic points for the church, these being the following:
- Salvation
- Sanctification
- Divine Healing, and
- Second Coming of Christ
Besides a fundamental theological depth like that already practiced in the denomination founded by missionary Simmerman, they provided the necessary confidence for this unification. It is worth mentioning that the founding Board of Directors included the following pastors:
Matías Gudiel Guzmán, President
Fernando Hernández Salguero, Vice President
Marco Antonio Rodríguez Pérez, Secretary
Felipe Ibáñez Solís, Treasurer
Vowels:
Efraín Dubon López
Rogelio Segura Ayala
Germán Uri Girón
Fifty-six years have passed, and the C&MA of Guatemala is today a strengthened denomination with programs of theological and pastoral training, social assistance, evangelism, and discipleship, as well as a national focus on child, women, and youth development, and a solid infrastructure thanks to the provision of our Almighty God, and a membership of more than 8,749 people gathered in 51 churches and 14 preaching fields.
Our vision for the future is grand because our God is great. We believe that the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Guatemala can contribute significantly to the integral development of our country and help extend the Kingdom of God in Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. It is worth mentioning that after 50 years since its founding, 16 founding pastors have passed away, but their selfless work remains as a legacy for future generations, who are already being guided by new leaders, graduates of the Alliance Bible Seminary and trained in the biblical doctrine practiced in all the churches of the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Guatemala.
Currently, the following churches and preaching fields with their respective pastors and official workers make up the C&MA.
“In God we will do great things.”
