Unity Amid Strife: The Unbreakable Spirit of Jerusalem’s Alliance Church

March 25, 2024

The Old City Jerusalem Alliance Church began in 1890, when it embarked on its mission during political turmoil in the region. Today, nestled amid ancient stones, it stands as a beacon of hope, proudly representing the sole Arab evangelical presence in the Old City. Though their journey has been fraught with challenges, their unwavering spirit shines brightly.

Throughout history, Jerusalem has faced trials and tribulations. In 1948, the city was torn apart, divided between East and West amid occupation and division. The church, once nestled in West Jerusalem, was displaced. Undeterred by adversity, however, it chose to move to the historic Old City, determined to keep its flame burning.

Today, this church is a hope among the ancient stones, the only Arab evangelical church in the Old City. Their road has not been easy, but their spirit remains unwavering.

Gratitude fills the members’ hearts as they receive messages of love and support from near and far. In a land gripped by hatred and extremism, they recognize that the battle is not only fought in the physical realm, but also in the spiritual.

The church condemns violence and stands firm against the forces of division. For them, it is not a political struggle, but a spiritual one. They see beyond the surface, recognize the suffering on both sides, and call for peace with fervent supplication.

Their mission is to break the chains of hatred and oppression, to be agents of peace and love in a war-torn land. That mission is latent in the people’s hearts and actions, and they ask us to join them in prayer, interceding for peace, comfort for the afflicted, and for the peace of those suffering.

The people’s vision is to build a church where all are welcome, where love reigns and where the gospel transforms lives. The Old City Jerusalem Church seeks to be a spiritual family that fosters growth and service among its members.

With their deep purpose of connecting, growing, and serving each person in their church family, they aspire to a deep connection with God and with each other, growth through community, and service through their ministry.

In the spirit of compassion and solidarity, the church extends its reach beyond the ancient walls of Jerusalem, reaching out to those in need across the West Bank. Among them are individuals displaced from the Gaza Strip, unable to return to their devastated homes. Despite the challenges of serving in such circumstances, the church is dedicated to assisting these displaced individuals, providing support and aid where it’s needed most. Navigating the political landscape, though, makes transferring funds a daunting task, yet the church persists, unwavering in its commitment to helping those affected by the turmoil of the region.

In the heart of Jerusalem, during struggle and turmoil, this church is a testament to the power of faith, hope and love. And as they continue their journey, they invite all to join them in building a brighter and more peaceful future for all.
