More than 300 men, women and children are experiencing tangible change each week through a growing community initiative in Sonarpur, where sports, education, and spiritual mentoring are shaping lives, healing brokenness, and igniting hope.
Under the leadership of Srinath* and his team, the project in Sonarpur operates three soccer schools, a computer training center, a coaching center, three Kids Clubs, two churches, and regular community programs in Sonarpur in Kolkata, India.
These touchpoints have not only brought academic and personal development opportunities but have also introduced a message of love, discipline, and eternal purpose to a region marked by family instability and cultural barriers.
“These children used to wander without direction,” says Srinath. “Now, some are winning in school, others in sports, and many are learning what it means to live with integrity and faith.”
A testimony shared by a 15-year-old, a longtime participant in the soccer school and Kid’s Club, reveals the heart of the project’s impact. “At first, I couldn’t even kick a ball properly. But now I dream of playing professionally,” says the teenager. “More than that,” he says, “the stories from the Bible have changed me. I don’t fight like before. Even my family sees the difference.”
This story echoes the transformation seen in dozens of children who once struggled with anger, addiction, or academic failure and now show evidence of growth, character, and hope.
The Alliance World Fellowship (AWF) has partnered with this local church for nearly three years for their community service project. Praise God for what he is doing among its people in this area.
The initiative has not been without challenges. Sporadic attendance and local resistance stemming from cultural or religious opposition have tested the perseverance of the team. Yet, their unwavering consistency and open-hearted invitations have begun to shift mindsets in the neighborhood.
Programs run throughout the week:
- Soccer School (Mon-Sat)
- Computer Center & Coaching Classes (Mon-Fri)
- Kids Clubs (Saturdays)
- Youth Club (Weekly)
- Women’s Programs (Monthly)
- Couples and Family Meetings (Twice a year)
These activities cater to diverse age groups, offering structure, discipline, and care. The inclusion of a local church brings spiritual and legal support to the ministry, especially in navigating faith-related challenges in the local context.
The project currently reaches approximately 190 children, 65 women, and 40 men. Immediate outcomes include improved school performance, growing participation, and visible behavioral changes. Intermediate results show new skills, social engagement, and discipline among youth.
Ultimately, the hope is not merely for better grades or goals scored, but for hearts turned toward eternal life, where true transformation begins. “We are not just building programs,” Srinath says. “We are building lives.”
Although some community opposition persists, the team remains focused, prayerful, and open to learning. “The journey is long,” he says. “But we are committed to walking it with our people, as salt and light.”
