For two days, the voices of 70 leaders from five nations rose together in Madrid, united by a singular mission: to dive into the depths of Alliance Theology and Identity.
This first-ever Forum on Theology and Alliance Identity was particularly significant as it provided pastors and leaders with an opportunity to engage deeply in Alliance identity, a crucial step for many seeking to strengthen their roots amid current trends that can lead believers to drift from their origins. Unlike the previous A.B. Simpson Lectures promoted by INFORMA, which focused solely on theological matters, this gathering emphasized the C&MA’s core identity, addressing the DNA of the movement.
AWF President Dr. Jura Yanagihara opened the event with a video presentation outlining a vision to cultivate a renewed sense of identity within the Alliance family, marking this forum the first of its kind. Prominent speakers included Dr. Walter Pérez of the International Commission of Theological Education (ICTE); Rev. Rocco Rausch, a member of the first cohort of the AWF Young Scholars Program; Dr. Francisco Cerrón, the president of INFORMA; and Rev. Timothy Westergren, director of Alliance Missions in Spain. The host church’s worship team led attendees in hymns by A.B. Simpson, such as “Jesus Only,” and other worship songs, deepening the collective experience of worship.
Each presenter focused on unique facets of Alliance theology. Dr. Pérez emphasized “The Deeper Life” and “The Role of the Holy Spirit,” reminding attendees, “Sometimes, we fear the Spirit’s work.” Rev. Rausch reflected on A.B. Simpson’s life, stressing the theme of sanctification through Christ: “The essence of the Fourfold Gospel is the life of Jesus. He dwells in us and lives through us.”
Dr. Cerrón discussed the Fourfold Gospel, focusing on salvation and Christ’s return. He challenged attendees with Simpson’s view of salvation as a journey marked by repentance, humility, and submission. “This must be preached and taught in our congregations,” Cerrón stressed, “otherwise, we risk fostering a shallow Christianity.” Rev. Westergren centered his message on divine healing, underscoring Simpson’s belief in holistic redemption and restoration.
Attendees connected during breaks and coffee sessions, sharing their thoughts and experiences. Pastor Jorge Jiménez of Valencia, Spain reflected, “After the sessions, I felt called to seek a deeper relationship with our Savior. It was a true blessing to participate.” Cecilia Mercon, a missionary from Manchester, England, said, “The forum blessed me immensely. Learning about Simpson’s life and our Christ-centered doctrine was inspiring. Everything was so lovingly organized.” The forum’s conclusion was marked by Holy Communion and an anointing service, offering prayers for healing and restoration.
With 70 participants including pastors, leaders and missionaries from Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and England, the gathering took place at the Alianza de Amor Church, led by Rev. Germán Vargas, October 25-26, 2024.
The event was hosted by the Alliance World Fellowship (AWF), the EMERALD (Europe & Middle East) Region, the Spanish Federation of C&MA Churches (FIACME), and the Alliance Institute for Ministry Formation (INFORMA). The forum marked a significant step in strengthening the Alliance identity across Europe, and its impact is expected to spread across various autonomous communities, inspiring other churches in the region to host similar events. Plans are already underway for a 2025 forum in France, gathering French-speaking Alliance pastors and leaders from the region.
