The C&MA in Canada was officially recognized within Canada as a formal family of churches in the early 1980s. This deeper life and mission holiness movement launched by A.B. Simpson in New York City quickly moved north into Toronto, and then primarily west. There is great irony that A.B. Simpson was a boy from Prince Edward Island, yet the C&MA has never had a prominent presence in this area and there is no Alliance church there today. The C&MA in Canada has a lot of work to do to grow across Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Quebec is a least-reached area in North America. Today, the C&MA in Canada has approximately 440 churches and many emerging new ventures. Our vision is to go well beyond this and continue expanding, with our growth focused on deeper life and mission DNA. We need and are committed to remaining true to our mission.
The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) is committed to Jesus and His mission. We are a group of approximately 440 local churches in Canada, and we send people to live on mission locally and globally. We aim to be a Christ-centered, Spirit-empowered, Mission-focused movement in everything we do. Our Vision Prayer is, “Oh God, with all our hearts, we long for You. Come, transform us to be Christ-centered, Spirit-empowered, Mission-focused people, multiplying disciples everywhere.” Therefore, Culture, Nurture, and Venture are three key strategic drivers of our work at The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada. Culture focuses on assuming and maintaining a posture of passionately living in continuous spiritual renewal, with one purpose – to see Jesus happening everywhere. Nurture focuses on stimulating and engaging new and innovating ways of identifying, developing, resourcing and mobilizing a new generation of workers living a deeper life in mission for our movement. Venture keeps our focus on the rescue mission of bringing least reached people groups access to Jesus.
To help accomplish these, we are developing new and innovative ways to move forward. New Ventures is growing through bold and courageous experimentation to launch initiatives that have the potential to become churches as the Spirit of God brings wind to the sails of these start-up partnerships. Envision Canada is a very recent and very exciting leader development track that lines up with our deeper life and mission heartbeat and is growing at a significant pace. We hope and believe that many young people will be developed through Envision mission trips, internships and apprenticeships. Along with this, Venture is a major thrust of the Canadian church. The Jaffray Project is providing a means to help C&MA people go deeper in Jesus and further on mission.
Most significantly, least-reached people group initiatives are being launched with resource kits going to all interested local churches on how they can bring access to Jesus. In Canada itself, many churches are considering how they can reach the scattered diasporas coming into Canada in record numbers. This includes ministries to international students and Muslim peoples, as well as a very dynamic refugee program. Holy Spirit encounters and Soul Care conferences are helping our constituency to rediscover or, for the first time, encounter the manifest presence of Jesus through the powerful presence and enabling of the Holy Spirit.
