Who could imagine that a trip to New York would have resulted in the birth of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Costa Rica? This national church is young but full of energy to fulfill the Great Commission alongside other churches in Central America.
Less than 50 years ago, a lady called Nieta Quirós traveled from Costa Rica to New York to visit her family. She attended a church service of the C&MA and gave her life to the Lord. Upon returning to Costa Rica, she started a small group in her house. Once the group was established, she made a phone call to the office of the C&MA in New York and told them she had a group to baptize. This resulted in the establishment of the C&MA of Costa Rica in 1976.
Currently, the national church is in reorganization, restructuring the national youth ministry and the Christian education team. They also have been holding weekly pastor’s meetings.
Nowadays the C&MA of Costa Rica has six churches: one of them is C&MA Colima, which was the first church that resulted from the work of Sister Quirós. C&MA San Francisco was the second church to be established a couple of years later. All congregations are in the metropolitan area. They have seven accredited pastors, and three of them are ordained.
“Pray for the opening of new churches, and the training of new pastors and leaders who will carry out the ministry work. Pray also for formal biblical-theological training of our church leaders,” asks Rev. Mario Francisco Barboza, president of the national church.
